WharfMaster's Building
The Missouri Pacific Produce Terminal Administration Building, built prior to World War II, is located on the west side of the ASB Railroad Bridge along the Riverfront Heritage Trail. Largely destroyed by a fire in 1993, the Port Authority will develop a hovering sculptural rooftop in order to conserve the modern era ruin as a plaza for public events. Surrounding projects include the Wetlands Ecosystem Restoration and the ASB Bridge Underpass, both of which will be visible from the Wharf Master's Building site – all components of the Riverfront West Conservation Zone.
To promote the vision of a sustainable riverfront, the site will feature a pervious paved surface surrounding the building, and include the integration of alternative energy sources and rainwater collection facilities. As the Wetlands Ecosystem surrounds the Wharf Master's Building on three sides, native plant life will be integrated into the project's border through the use of potted plants, flower boxes and unique sculpture seating.
