Town of Kansas Pedestrian Bridge
As part of the Riverfront Heritage Trail, the Town of Kansas Pedestrian Bridge adds access from Riverfront West and Berkley Park to the historic River Market area, while providing an excellent scenic overlook of the Missouri River and the continuing Riverfront development. This 650-foot long bridge provides a bicycle and pedestrian link between the north end of Main Street and the original birthplace of the city on the banks of the Missouri River. Spanning the Town of Kansas archaeological site, two railroads and the Missouri River floodwall, the bridge serves as a critical connection between the River Market/CBD and the many new amenities along the river.
The northern terminus of the bridge is located within the "footprint" of the old Municipal Wharf. During 2009, the existing structure will undergo enhancements that increase the ease of use for bicyclists, including the installation of a "U-Rail" track system within the stairtower. In conjunction with the sustainable mission of the Port Authority, an Alternative Energy EcoArt demonstration project will be installed upon the bridge, as a wind and solar energy producing piece. Other enhancements will include an extended entrance area with sculptural seating and signage, as well as a monumental bio-retention garden placed beneath the bridge to collect and distribute excess stormwater.
